If you’re craving fresh air, wide-open spaces and a proper switch-off without driving hours from the Sunshine Coast, you’re in luck. One of the best weekend escapes sits right here in our own backyard, and it’s made even better when you’re exploring it in a Toyota Hilux.
From 4WD-only tracks to hidden swimming holes and peaceful lakeside views, here’s the ultimate Sunshine Coast weekend adventure you can easily knock over from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon.
Kick off your getaway with a scenic drive through the Sunshine Coast Hinterland towards Kenilworth. The rolling hills, country roads and lush paddocks make the perfect start to an outdoorsy weekend.
Of course you can't go through Kenilworth without making a stop at the world-famous Kenilworth Bakery! Fuel up with a coffee and pick up some road-trip essentials. Whether you go classic pie or take on the famous 1kg donut, it’s the perfect place to start your adventure.
This is where the Hilux earns its reputation. The road into Booloumba Creek requires a high-clearance 4WD, which depending on when you go can keep the crowds down and the sense of adventure up. Once you’re in, you’ll find:
Hilux highlight: Creek crossings, which after some rain kinda make you glad you’re in a capable 4WD.
After setting up camp, take a short drive to the start of the Booloumba Falls walking track. It’s a relatively easy walk with a big payoff: waterfalls, natural rock pools and incredible hinterland views.
Cool off with a swim back at the creek or simply kick back in your camp chair and soak up the rainforest quiet.
Once the sun dips behind the trees, this in when the real magic starts. This area is known for beautiful night skies, and the kind of peaceful atmosphere that feels far removed from the coast, even though it’s less than two hours away. Set yourself up with a crackling campfire and you'll feel a world away from reality.
Enjoy dinner under the trees and fall asleep to the sound of the creek.
Pack up camp and head towards the charming town of Imbil for a coffee or a quick breakfast. From there, it’s a short and scenic drive to Lake Borumba, a quiet and underrated gem for Sunshine Coast locals.
Spend your morning:
The Hilux’s spacious tray makes it easy to bring all your gear, from esky to water toys, camping chairs and anything else you might need for the ultimate weekend getaway.
We're partial to a pub feed ourselves but treat yourself to a picnic if that suits you better. Imbil Pub offers a classic country lunch, or you can set up a picnic by the lake with the snacks and supplies you loaded into the Hilux before leaving home.
If you’re heading home mid-afternoon, why not consider a quick detour through Amamoor? With a little timing, you can catch the Mary Valley Rattler steam train rolling through the trees, a picture-perfect finish to the trip.
By late afternoon, you’re back on the Sunshine Coast feeling like you’ve been on a real adventure, without losing half the weekend to driving.
