There’s nothing better than hitting the beach with your furry best friend, salty air, wagging tails and sandy paws included! Luckily, the Sunshine Coast is home to some of Queensland’s most beautiful (and welcoming) dog-friendly beaches. Whether your pup loves to run free, splash in the surf or simply dig in the sand, we’ve rounded up our top 5 spots to check out.
Off-leash: Yes, designated areas
Why we love it: This long, quiet stretch of sand offers the ultimate off-leash freedom. With plenty of space for zoomies and a gentle surf, it’s a great spot for energetic dogs to run and explore. The access point via North Shore Road makes it easy to find and you’ll often spot locals enjoying peaceful sunrise walks with their pups.
Off-leash: Yes, but only before 8am and after 4pm daily (beach access points between 270 and 276).
Why we love it: If you’re an early bird (or love a sunset stroll) Moffat Beach is a gem. It's popular with locals thanks to its laid-back vibe and stunning views. While dogs need to be leashed during the day, off-leash hours are perfect for a peaceful puppy play without the crowds.
Off-leash: Yes, in the designated dog beach zone
Why we love it: We're a bit partial to this one as its really close to us at Sunshine Toyota. But really Currimundi is a beach-lake combo, making it ideal for dogs who like calmer waters. The northern end offers a great off-leash area and the nearby lake provides a gentle paddle zone for pups who aren’t ready for the full waves just yet.
Off-leash: Yes, north of the Stumers Creek access
Why we love it: This is one of the most popular off-leash beaches on the Coast and for good reason! It’s easily accessible, has designated dog wash stations and plenty of parking (it can be really busy in Summer months though). It’s a buzzing social spot where dogs and their humans can enjoy a friendly, fun beach day together.
Off-leash: Yes, in signed zones from beach access 198 to 201 (from the eastern side of Point Cartwright headland to the south of Gulai Street). We recommend checking signage! And between two beach accesses—210 and 217
Why we love it: This golden stretch between Kawana and the Point Cartwright lighthouse is perfect for active dogs and their equally active owners. There’s plenty of space to explore and the coastal path nearby is ideal for a post-swim walk. Just remember to follow the signage to stick to off-leash areas only, or alternatively have your puppy friend on a leash.
