I’ve spent a few days behind the wheel of the new Toyota bZ4X, and honestly, this time around it has completely changed how I feel about electric vehicles.
I’ve driven EVs before. I liked the idea of them, but there were always small compromises that stopped them from feeling like a true everyday car. The updated bZ4X 2WD feels different. It doesn’t just feel like an EV anymore, it feels like a genuinely well‑sorted Toyota that just happens to be all-electric.
One of the biggest changes is how much Toyota have refined and upgraded the 2WD model, the entry into the bZ4X range. Where it once felt a little basic, it’s now packed with features you will actually use day-to-day.
Things like dual wireless phone charging, blind spot monitoring, heated seats, heated steering wheel and a power tailgate with a kick sensor make it feel really luxe. The panoramic camera is a standout too, making parking effortless, even in tight supermarket or school carparks.
These updates might sound small on paper, but together they change how the car feels to live with. It now ticks the same comfort and convenience boxes most people expect from a modern SUV.
One feature I didn’t personally use but love the idea of is MyRoom.
With MyRoom, you can fast charge and stay comfortably inside the car with the air‑conditioning and music running or even charging your phone, all while the bZ4X itself is topping up its battery. It’s a genuinely clever use of EV technology and perfect for quick stops, road trips or just waiting out the heat while you charge on a warm Sunshine Coast day.
The extended battery range has to be the biggest difference for me compared to the outgoing version of the bZ4X.
It’s noticeably better and more importantly, it’s completely removed the range anxiety I used to feel. Trips I would’ve second‑guessed before now dont; only feel but easily achievable.
Driving to Brisbane and back? Easy. No stress, no planning around chargers, no constantly watching the battery percentage.
After driving over 330 kilometres from the Sunshine Toyota dealership at Currimundi to Maroochydore, out to Ewen Maddock Dam, then down to the north side of Brisbane and back, I still had 193km of range left and 38% battery.
A full loop from Maroochydore to Eumundi, then down to Birtinya and home only used about 14% charge. And the trip from Maroochydore back to the dealership along Nicklin Way? Just 1%.
There used to be this saying with EV's - the ABC's of electrified driving which means 'Always Be Charging'. Plug in at every opportunity. Plan your life around it. That doesn’t feel necessary anymore with the new bZ4X.
With the kind of range the new bZ4X has, you relax into eletrified driving. You stop thinking about charging and start enjoying the drive, something that genuinely surprised me.
Range aside, the bZ4X still drives beautifully. There’s instant pick‑up with no lag, just smooth, quiet power when you put your foot down. It’s comfortable, refined and effortless both around town or on longer drives — the bZ4X showcases everything you’d expect from a Toyota SUV, just with a completely different driving feel.
Space is another real win. With growing kids, I can comfortably fit three across the back, including a car seat, without it feeling cramped. There’s also plenty of room in the boot for all the extras, bags, sport gear, or weekend gear without needing to play Tetris. It's size & comfort means it genuinely works as a family car, not just a commuter EV.
If you’ve been curious about electric vehicles but weren’t quite ready, the new Toyota bZ4X might be the one that changes your mind, the way it changed mine.
An extended test drive makes all the difference.
