Feelin' good now!

Choosing the right fuel is one of the simplest but most important parts of looking after your new Toyota. With several fuel options available, it’s easy to get confused about which one is best for your vehicle. Here’s a quick guide to help you understand the different fuel types available and what’s recommended for your Toyota.

Unleaded Petrol (91, 95 & 98)

  • Unleaded 91 (Regular Unleaded): This is the most common fuel type in Australia and is suitable for many Toyota models. If your vehicle handbook recommends 91, there’s no need to use a higher grade.
  • Premium Unleaded 95 & 98: Some Toyota vehicles (such as certain hybrid and performance variants) may recommend or require premium fuel. These fuels have a higher octane rating, which can improve performance and efficiency in engines designed for them. It's always best to check your owner’s manual to confirm.

Tip: Using a higher octane fuel than your Toyota requires generally won’t harm your car, but it won’t give extra benefits either.

Unleaded E10 (Ethanol Blend)

E10 is a blend of 90% unleaded petrol and 10% ethanol. It’s usually a few cents cheaper than standard unleaded and can be used in many modern Toyota vehicles. If your fuel cap or manual indicates your Toyota is E10-compatible, it’s perfectly safe to use.

Note: Some models (especially older vehicles) are not designed for E10, so always double-check your handbook before filling up.

Diesel

Toyota’s diesel range, including popular models like the HiLux, LandCruiser and Prado, are designed to run on ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD), which is the standard diesel available in Australia.

Diesel engines are known for their towing power, fuel efficiency, and durability, making them a great option for work, travel, and adventure. Always make sure you're using diesel fuel in a Diesel-compatible engine. Put the wrong fuel in your car? Here's what to do!

AdBlue

Some Toyota diesel vehicles are equipped with advanced emission systems that require AdBlue, a special fluid made from urea and demineralised water. AdBlue is injected into the exhaust system to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, helping your Toyota meet strict Australian emission standards while staying efficient.

  • Topping up: AdBlue is consumed at a different rate to diesel fuel and usually needs to be topped up every few thousand kilometres. You’ll get a dashboard alert well before the tank runs low.
  • Where to get it: You can purchase AdBlue at most service stations, auto retailers, or directly through Sunshine Toyota’s service team.
  • Important tip: Never ignore AdBlue warnings, if the tank runs dry, your vehicle may not restart until it’s refilled.

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)

While LPG is still available in some areas, it’s becoming less common in Australia and is not recommended or supported for new Toyota vehicles.

Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

  • Hybrid Vehicles: Toyota hybrids still require petrol, usually regular unleaded 91 or E10 (depending on the model). The hybrid system then works alongside the petrol engine to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
  • Battery-Electric Vehicles (BEVs): If you’ve purchased Toyota’s new all-electric bZ4X, you won’t need fuel at all, just plug in and recharge using home or public charging stations.

Which Fuel Should You Use?

The best fuel for your Toyota depends on your model:

  • Check the fuel cap on your vehicle, it will clearly indicate what type of fuel you should use.
  • Refer to your Owner’s Manual for full details and recommendations.
  • When in doubt, ask our team at Sunshine Toyota, we’ll be happy to guide you.

Final Thoughts

Using the correct fuel helps your Toyota perform at its best, keeps running costs down and protects your engine long-term. Always stick to the recommended fuel type and you’ll enjoy smooth, reliable driving for years to come.
